For the longest time, I believed, along with my strategy consultant peers, that the essence of strategy lay in uncovering the right answer to the strategic problem.
But the real game-changer is ensuring that you're addressing the right problem in the first place. This shift in mindset places the emphasis on strategic outcomes rather than getting mired in the "how", the "tools" and the "processes".
For example, instead of fixating on improving, automating, or cost-cutting within a system, challenge whether you even need that system for the new solution you're sculpting.
Here's another example: AI is all the rage today, and rightfully so. However, remember that AI is a means, not an end. The pivotal question isn't how to incorporate AI into your business, but rather, what you envision your business becoming in 5, 10, or 20 years. Only then can you consider AI as one of the levers or key initiatives to bring that vision to life - or perhaps, realize it's not the right fit.
So, don't be seduced by trendy "tools", and don't fixate on finding the "right" answer. Invest your time in pinpointing the exact problem you aim to solve. That's where the true power of strategy lies. 💡
